MPET Celebrates Milestone with the Arrival of Mega Vessel MSC Tessa

The MSC PSA European Terminal (MPET), a joint venture between PSA and Terminal Investment Ltd (TiL), achieved a notable milestone on 2 October, with the arrival of the mega container vessel MSC Tessa alongside the left bank of the river Scheldt. Setting a record with its 16m draft, it became the first ship of this depth to call at the Port of Antwerp.
The achievement was the culmination of a six-stage trial project, which saw the draft of ships calling at the Port of Antwerp gradually increased from 15.7meters (m) to 16m. The undertaking was a collaborative effort between the Flemish and Dutch pilotage, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the Communal Nautical Authority, and the Port of Antwerp Bruges.
The 0.3m increase in draft capacity enables vessels to carry an extra 1,000 TEUs. The record marks a significant development as Antwerp seeks to become the primary port of call for the largest container vessels, some of which exceed 400m in length and 60m in width.
